The photographer, tamer of light
Lighting the work before capturing it
Our job is to enlighten, both metaphorically and figuratively: to shed light on the works in order to enlighten us.
Click click and it's on film! Something happens between the first blink of the flash and the final image.
You set up the light, and then change, move, intensify, mute, diffuse, redirect, reduce, soften, make harsher, turn, cover, lower, deal with shadow and reflections, reveal the material, don't bury it, don't burn it... Sometimes the works are biddable and allow the light to adorn them with a degree of pleasure: at such times you feel that the image is made 'all by itself'; at other times, it's a relentless battle between the photographer and the work; he has to use trickery and get out the big guns to master a reflection, a material, transparency... But the end always justifies the means!
Photograph - φωτoς, photos: light, brightness and γραφειν, graphein: paint, draw, write, write using light... without light you have no picture...
