Our images illuminate the façade of the Grand Palais
To mark the 'Gauguin, Artist as Alchemist' exhibition, the Grand Palais has given 'carte blanche' to the Athem installation studio for a digital animation of the monument's façade using Gauguin's images.
An original museographic creation using video-mapping is presented to visitors and passers-by every evening between 15 and 30 November, from 6 pm to 10 pm. The high definition images of Gauguin's works that provide the raw materials for the installation were produced by the Photo Agency.
Gauguin's works in ultra–high definition
Athem has brought to light what these works share in common rather than the works themselves: the artist's materials, motifs, colours, subjects and techniques. The east façade of the Grand Palais comes to life as a result of this installation created using ultra high definition images from the Photo Agency.
3D to serve the exhibition
Innovation is part this exhibition thanks to the specific expertise of the Photo Agency, notably in the field of 3D modelling. Included in the films projected throughout the visit and in the RMN-Grand Palais publications, over 30 works have been digitised using ultra high precision photogrammetry to ensure their geometric and colorimetric accuracy. This 3D digitisation technique allows a different perception of the work, observing it in all of its forms and discovering its multiple details. 21 ceramic and wood sculptures and 11 paintings on loan from the Musée d'Orsay have been modelled in this way.
The 3D works are also available to view at the www.grandpalais.fr and www.musee-orsay.fr websites, on the Sketchfab platform and on social networks using the Sketchfab Player.
