► The Water Lilies at the Orangerie
The centenary of their acquisition
The day after the Armistice in November 1918, Monet informed his friend Georges Clemenceau that he wished to donate two panels of his Water Lilies to the state as a symbol of peace. The act of donation was signed on 12 April 1922 and all eight compositions were finally hung in the Musée de l'Orangerie in 1927, after the artist's death.

► La Fontaine's Fables
350 years since the publication of the first collection
In 1668, Jean de La Fontaine published the first collection of his celebrated Fables. They were dedicated to Louis of France, later known as Le Grand Dauphin, aged six at the time. This first work includes the most famous fables: The Fox and the Crow, The Ant and the Grasshopper, The Dog and The Oak and the Reed. Two further collections followed in 1678-1679, and another in 1693. Morals and stories that have inspired illustrators, painters and artists and brought many a recitation class to life.

► Canaletto
Italian painter (Venise 1697-1768)
Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto, was a Venetian painter who is principally known for his landscapes of his native city. He died in 1768 in the city that he depicted from every possible angle, providing inspiration to several Italian artists (Bernardo Bellotto, Michele Marieschi, Giambattista Tiepolo, Francesco Guardi) and the European landscape painters of the 18th and 19th century.

► Amboise Vollard
1868-1939
It is 150 years since the birth of Amboise Vollard, a patron to artists at the end of the 19th and the start of the 20th century. He used his talents as a gallery owner, art dealer, writer and publisher to work with such major artists as Cézanne, Bonnard, Vuillard, Matisse and Picasso. Many private and public collection owe some of their richness and diversity to his careful eye.
