Mon truc en plumes, plumes de zoiseaux !
mercredi 16 novembre 2016
Musée du Quai Branly showcases the art of pre-Columbian plumassiers, particularly the symbolism of the feather in pre-Columbian America.
In Europe, from the Middle Ages onwards, plumassiers decorated hats and clothing for noblemen. At the turn of the century, cabarets and music halls and later, Haute Couture, became the plumassiers' new customers. This very feminine work is now disappearing: of 425 plumassiers in Paris, only five now remain, making a living from Haute Couture, shows and creative industries.
And let's not forget the other, essential use of birds' feathers which, shaped for writing, soon replaced the reed pen. Depending on the effect required, people used feathers from the goose, the crow, the turkey or the capercaillie.
