The Peloponnese, the Aegean Sea, the Ionian sea, Athens, Corfu, Santorini, the Cyclades, Mykonos... To travel and roam through Greece is to encounter the souvenirs left behind by time.
Ancient Greece, with its cities, philosophy, democracy and its theatre has been one of the models for European culture and modern western civilisation since the Renaissance.
Many have been drawn to and admired this civilisation in European museums through emblematic sculptures such as the Venus de Milo and the Victory of Samothrace in the Louvre or the friezes of the Parthenon Marbles at the British Museum.
These works are cloaked in mystery and capture our imagination raising questions such as: where did they come from? Who created them? In what era? Why are the arms missing? What is this kneeling Venus doing? Where is this procession going to?
Added to this are the holiday postcards and their brightly coloured landscapes, inviting us to buy a plane ticket and take off for this fascinating destination.
In reality, Greece is made up of parcels of territory separated by the mountains, and the islands are like miniature countries with their own identity to discover. Don't hesitate to take to the side roads and lose yourself in the fragrant countryside for discoveries that never end.
