The Musée du Luxembourg is hosting an exhibition dedicated to the internationally renowned Czech artist, Alfonse Mucha from 12 September 2018 to 27 January 2019. Inseparable from the image of Paris 1900, his reputation comes mainly from his elegant posters in a very distinctive style, emblematic of Art Nouveau.

After passing through the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, Alfonse Mucha arrived in Paris in the late 1880s. He studied under Jules-Joseph Lefebvre and Jean-Paul Laurens at the Académie Julian. Lefebvre's allegorical compositions, with their idealised female figures, and Laurens' great historical paintings in theatrical settings probably influenced the direction Mucha would follow during his career.

"Art can never be new" - in these words, Mucha signifies that art is eternal and has nothing to do with ephemeral fashions. It is therefore paradoxical that Mucha owes his reputation to Art Nouveau which was indeed largely dependent on fashion.

Through all of these works, it is a human figure who takes shape, a mystic and visionary, animated by a genuine political belief, at the time of the Czech national revival and the explosion of the Austro -Hungarian Empire. All of the preparatory work for the Slav Epic which he worked on between 1911 and 1928 shows his attachment to his native country and his dream of unity among the Slav peoples. More than the master of the Art Nouveau, it is the abundant works and singular personality of this artist that the exhibition intends to reveal to the visitors.
